Lena Raine - Chicory: A Colorful Tale (Original Soundtrack)
Lena Raine has worked on a number of soundtracks, one of which for the game Chicory (which I haven't played). It retains Lena Raine's overall style, the one present in Celeste or Minecraft: Nether Update. However, it's still quite different. It has an overall more peaceful and floral theme, with a lot of flute. The instrumentation is quite varied : the flute, some dark low-pitched piano, some electronic instruments and more.
Lena Raine talks more in details about her motivation and inspiration for the various songs in a blog post. One thing that is not mentioned is how Art Lesson, inspired from the eponymous game, ressembles part of Joe Hisaishi's Howl's Moving Castle. I think this is quite appropriate, as both this great film and this album share a similar cosiness at times. And a line in Turnabout Squeeze reminded me of Cornered from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. I don’t know how intentional these callbacks are, and I may have missed some, but they sure are fun to spot.
It feels to me that it achieves everything needed for a soundtrack. Most music is non-intrusive, but still brings some accompanying melodies. And for the more intense moments of the game (I suppose), there are some darker or more dynamic songs. I'm overall very pleased with this album. I like Lena Raine touch, while the diversity and number of tracks means I've a lot to listen to.
